The Champions League drawings for the 2021/2022 season will be held tonight in Istanbul, Turkey, by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Another highly anticipated event at the draws will be the awards night, where players from various European clubs will be recognised for their outstanding achievement throughout the previous football season.
As we all know, UEFA just announced the three finalists, which were Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bryune and Chelsea midfielders Ngolo Kanté and Jorge Luiz Frello, better known as Jorginho. All three had fantastic seasons, with De Bryune winning the English Premier League and the League Cup, and Ngolo Kanté, like his countrymen Jorginho, winning the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup.
Jorginho, on the other hand, went one step further to win the 2020 UEFA Euros with the Italian national team, which will be held at Wembley Stadium in England. Jorginho is now in pole position to win the coveted UEFA Men’s Player award, which is given to the best player in Europe for the previous season.
I’ll reveal three records that Jorginho will set if he wins the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award in this post.
1. THE AWARD’S FIRST ITALIAN WINNER
Isn’t it surprising? That is correct, because no Italian player has ever won the award since it was renamed from UEFA Club Footballer of the Year to its current form in 2010. One could argue that this is incorrect, given that Gianluigi Buffon, the legendary Italian goalkeeper, also received the former edition of the award in 2003. However, despite winning the European Club Footballer award in 2009, Lionel Messi is only regarded to have won the award two times for the same reason.
2. WINNER OF THE AWARD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN CHELSEA’S HISTORY
If the Italian midfielder wins tonight in Istanbul, he will become the first and only Chelsea player to win the accolade in its history. In fact, following Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil Van Dijk, Jorginho would become only the third non-English player to win the award while playing in England.
3. WINNER OF THE BALLON D’OR IN 2021
Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus led Real Madrid to the UEFA Champions League title and Portugal to the UEFA Euro Cup before claiming the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla in 2016. He was the first and only player to win the European treble. The Portuguese legend went on to win the Ballon d’Or that same year. If Jorginho wins today, he will become only the second player in history to do so, and if history is any indication, he might be on his way to earning his first Ballon D’or championship later this year, making him the only Chelsea player to win the prestigious accolade.
